I’m sorry Crowley, was fourteenth century England not interesting enough for you? Was there not enough intrigue and assasinations and usurpations?
What on Earth were you doing the whole time?

The “the 14th century was boring” thing is 100% bullshit/Crowley fronting. There is a line, closer to the end of the book, and iirc it goes like this: “He hadn’t felt like this since the 14th century.” The context of the line? How he feels about THE IMPENDING APOCALYPSE.

Crowley LIES TO HIMSELF in his narration. It is his thing, at least towards the start of the book (watch him develop past that). And it was probably not even the intrigue and assassinations and usurpations. Instead, consider that the 14th century is the time in the second millenium when the Black Death hit Europe hardest, with an estimated death toll of 50-75% of the population.

Another line or footnote mentions Crowley took one look at the Spanish Inquisition and then left to get himself drunk for the rest of the century. Current data suggests he does not deal well with seeing huge amounts of death and suffering. And hundreds of years later, apparently, aggressively denies to himself how much it affected him. Because he’s a Demon™, and therefore ought to not be bothered by that.
