based on this text post that i couldn’t stop thinking about since i started critical role:

Mollymauk digging himself out of the dirt 2 years ago, without a name or memories. And then having to quickly learn how to be a person again, craft an identity for himself from scratch, and eventually ending up being happy with and liking who he’s become; informs so much about him.

The way he presents himself to the world, the colourful clothes, decorated horns, tattoos. That he’s made his appearance and his body 100% his. To make himself into something he likes, that he feels satisfied and comfortable with.

His dismissal of people’s pasts and life stories, which I previously assumed was arrogance, but instead is a deep understanding and belief that knowing a person’s history isn’t important, it’s the person who’s standing in front of him, and who they are in the present, that matters.

His ‘I’ll try anything once’ chaotic mode of operation, to fill up his mind again with memories, excitement and experiences, and maybe to take away any of the lingering emptiness he feels.

I really love Molly, and love the way this episode explains so much about his character

Can we talk about that wonderful exchange between Beau, Fjord and Kara, and specifically, Liam’s / Caleb’s reaction?

Beau does her utmost to compliment Kara.

Fjord’s reaction: ‘ “You got a nice face???!” ‘

Beau protests.

And on the end of the row, Liam stares straight into the camera like he’s on the Office. For like 30 seconds straight.

Everyone knows what’s up.

Okay but has anyone brought up the fact that the Mighty Nein are the party of new beginnings and fresh starts and basically a bunch of people building themselves up from the ground?

  • Molly: has no memories of his life older than 2 years old and has completely created himself a new persona from scratch
  • Jester: has literally only been out in the world for like a month and was never given a chance to live her life until now.
  • Caleb: thought he would be someone but lost it all and is now a firm believer in second chances and self-made posibilities
  • Fjord: found a sword in probably dubious circumstances and is now trying to figure out what this means and what he is after leaving his sailor life behind
  • Nott: desperate for a chance at a fresh start away from the prejudices that have haunted her her whole life.
  • Beau: ran away from the monks she’d been sent to and probably comes from a well sheltered environment and is now finding her own path in the world, free for the first time
  • Yasha: the girl who’s always coming and going without much warning, never staying in a place long enough to grow attached, suddenly finding this group of people that she always has a place with.

Like we are literally looking at them take their first steps towards who they will/want to be and it’s the perfect setting for their new identities to grow deeply rooted on each other and nourished by their mutual support as they build themselves and each other up into who they want to be and I am emotional about how perfectly fit this group of misfits is okay?

I used to give Molly shit for having the lowest Intelligence of the group at 11, and boggle at the fact that his Wisdom was his second highest score at 16 because seriously, that hospital scene.

But after the events of last episode I would like to formally apologize to him for that. Intelligence is supposed to measure raw knowledge retention and the poor guy is 2 years old, he doesn’t even know what a candy store is, of course he just plain hasn’t had enough time to know as much as anybody else.

And if he’s actually been cold reading people for his entire stint in the circus, my god his Wisdom had better be high.

So yeah, Molly has the worst stat distribution of anyone in the Mighty Nein, but give the poor guy a break, he’s been alive for two years and he’s had a lot of other shit to catch up on.
