“We had him cornered in Deastock about three months ago by a team of Crownsguard under the leadership of Carlos Ventuga, but this Hawker slew Carlos… We’re having to send whoever we can to try and retrieve and bring him back alive.” Fjord reacts to Starosta Wyatt talking about the Hawker in Whispers of War, Critical Role Episode 18
I’m slogging my way through the second campaign of critical role and enjoying the absolute heck of every second so far but at the moment there’s nothing that can top the expressions on Matt and Travis’ faces when Matt realized within .03 seconds of looking up during his intro that he was about to be nailed by a solid gallon of silly string
Went back and watched the scene where Beau and Yasha are talking to Trent, and holy crap, man, Caleb just freezes when the name comes up. Completely missed that the first time around, and I was even trying to keep an eye on his reactions to the mage stuff on a hunch.
I really, really like the eerie visual of whatever spell Trent cast on Yasha, too—the image of there almost being a secondary blurred image of his hands and mouth moving overlaid on his form (some sort of illusion to conceal the verbal/somatic spellcasting components?). As for what spell… I really don’t know. I immediately thought it might be a probing Detect Thoughts, but even on a failed save, the target knows you’re probing into its mind and can try to push you out (unless it’s a homebrewed or modded version). Couldn’t be Zone of Truth if he’s a wizard. And it certainly wasn’t anything that required input on Ashley’s part, so I’m thinking it was just him gleaning knowledge that Matt would know anyway. I dunno, man!
Definitely agree with folks theorizing that it seems like Caleb was hit with a Feeblemind spell (”You blast the mind of a creature, attempting to shatter its intellect and personality”) and that it was cured by a Greater Restoration (which, mechanically, would also remove the effects of the Modify Memory spell that probably planted the notion of his parents conspiring against the Empire). This means Trent potentially has access to 8th-level spells, which would make him at least a level 15 wizard. Even if that was just a risky one-off with a scroll or something, Modify Memory means he’s at the very, very least a level 9 wizard. This ain’t good for our newly-level-5 pals
